University of Washington Medical Center

More on Cancer Centers:

Located in Seattle, the University of Washington Medical Center is a large, comprehensive care center that has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top dozen medical centers in the country.

Along with the nearby Harborview Medical Center, it's one of two teaching hospitals associated with the University of Washington. The facility has 450 beds and its approximately 750 attending physicians are all full-time faculty members at the UW School of Medicine.

Opened in 1959, the hospital has been the site of many firsts, including the first long-term kidney dialysis, and was the site of the Northwest's first heart transplant and first total knee replacement.

In the realm of cancer care, the medical center has joined with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center to form the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), the only federally-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Northwest.

SCCA is committed to offering state-of-the-art cancer treatment options, including proton beam radiation therapy. They are also a comprehensive resource for cancer patients who are considering participation in a clinical trial. In addition, they provide activities that offer spiritual, emotional, and psychological support to both patients and caregivers and a pain clinic staff is available to help mesothelioma patients find the best way to manage their pain.
