University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center

More on Cancer Centers:

Located in Houston, the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center has been serving cancer patients since 1941. The institution is one of the nation's original three Comprehensive Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Act of 1971, and is one of 39 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers today. In 2007, U.S. News and World Report proclaimed Anderson to be the nation's best cancer care center.

M.D. Anderson is also a top research facility and is the hospital that developed the multi-modal method of treating cancer; i.e. combining cancer treatments that will work in tandem to provide a cure or lengthen the life span of a patient.

The facility's inpatient capacity is 520 but the center also offers myriad other cancer-related services and is home to five research buildings, three outpatient clinic buildings, a faculty office building, a proton radiation clinic building and a patient-family hotel. Another 300 inpatient beds will be available within the next few years.

Because the doctors here treat only cancer, including rare cancers such as mesothelioma, they are indeed the best at what they do. M.D. Anderson Cancer Center boasts a separate Thoracic Center for those patients who suffer from asbestos-caused cancer and other lung or chest-related cancers. The doctors there are pioneering a number of treatment techniques including the use of new minimally-invasive surgeries, photodynamic therapy, 3D-conformal radiotherapy, and techniques designed to spare pulmonary function. The Thoracic Center also participates in a number of clinical trials annually.

In addition to medical-related services, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center also provides supportive services for both patients and their family members or caregivers. Language and travel services are provided for the international cancer patient.
