Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Memorial Sloan-Kettering is world-renowned for its expertise. It's also the world's oldest and largest private cancer center, established in 1884 as the New York Cancer Hospital by a group of benefactors that included John Jacob Astor and several other wealthy philanthropists. Rebuilt in 1939 and then again in 1973, Memorial is consistently updated to include state-of-the-art treatment facilities for patients facing cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Sloan-Kettering Institute (SKI), established in the 1940s as a biomedical research institute, was joined with the hospital in 1960 to form a single entity.
According to publicized hospital records, the Center boasts more than 9,000 employees including 717 Memorial Hospital attending staff and 123 SKI members. In 2007, more than 21,000 patients were admitted to Memorial Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering accommodated 431,160 outpatient visits at its Manhattan and regional sites combined.
The center also has a new 26-story research building, opened in 2006, which allowed for expansion of its original research facilities. Another similar facility is scheduled to open in 2009.
Memorial Sloan-Kettering has pioneered a number of treatments for mesothelioma and is one of the leading centers in the nation for the treatment of this rare form of cancer, offering a range of new surgical and radiation techniques to address the disease and its symptoms. In addition, the hospital participates in a number of mesothelioma-related clinical trials.
MSKCC also offers pain and palliative care services, a counseling center for patients and family members, and an integrative medicine service, which offers alternative therapies to "enhance the mind, body, and spirit", such as acupuncture, yoga, meditation, hypnotherapy, music therapy, and more.
