Mayo Clinic

More on Cancer Centers:

Renowned for its innovative treatments and excellent doctors, the Mayo Clinic is the first and largest integrated, not-for-profit group practice in the world. Its main facility is located in Rochester, Minnesota and boasts a staff of about 1,700 doctors who are all experts in their fields. There are additional facilities in Scottsdale/Phoenix, Arizona and Jacksonville, Florida. Together, the three locations treat about a half-million patients annually.

The Mayo Clinic was named for a pioneer doctor and his two sons and was officially founded when its first building opened in 1914. Since that first small facility opened, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, working in tandem with St. Mary's Hospital and Rochester General Hospital, has grown to provide nearly 2,000 beds for patients who come to the facility from literally all over the world. Typically, the hospital admits about 250 new patients each day.

The Cancer Center at Mayo Clinic is known for its ability to treat all types of cancer, especially very rare forms such as mesothelioma. It is a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center employing the leading specialists in a number of different kinds of cancer, including thoracic (lung and chest) oncology. The hospital is also a world-renowned research center, participating in dozens of clinical trials each year. The Mayo Clinic also studies alternative treatments, such as gene and virus therapy and immunotherapy.
