H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center
Located in Tampa on the west coast of Florida, the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute was the brainchild of a Florida state senator who recognized the high incidence of cancer in Florida's large population of retirees and the need for better care in the region.
The center opened in 1986 as a 162-bed facility specifically designed to care for cancer patients. The facility now cares for about 7,000 inpatients per year and receives outpatient visits from another quarter-million cancer victims.
Patient care at Moffitt Cancer Center is organized into programs that focus on specific types of cancer, including thoracic cancer, which is the program that would treat mesothelioma patients. Moffitt uses a team approach to treating all kinds of cancer, so patients here should expect to work with a group of expert medical professionals that includes surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, dietitians and other medical professionals and support staff.
In addition, clinical trials are always available at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, so mesothelioma patients may take advantage of programs that offer promising new drugs or treatments.
Moffitt Cancer Center also offers a palliative care and pain management program, an integrated medicine program that offers less traditional therapies like massage and acupuncture, psychological and spiritual support programs for patients and their families, and rehab services.
