Duke University Hospital
A large facility with 924 beds, Duke University Hospital is, of course, associated with the prestigious Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Both the School of Medicine at the university and the hospital opened in 1930 and, since that time, both institutions have been renowned as among the best in the country.
For 18 years in a row, Duke University Hospital has been named as one of the top 10 U.S. hospitals in the annual U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" edition. It has also received numerous state and regional awards and is renowned throughout the country as a top teaching hospital and research facility.
The Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center is nationally recognized and treats nearly 6,000 new patients per year. It was one of the first established cancer centers in the U.S., founded in 1971 and is one of only 30 "comprehensive" cancer facilities in the nation. In addition, many of the doctors at the Duke Cancer Center are recognized leaders in their field and have pioneered new treatments and therapies in the fight against this dreaded disease. The hospital is also involved in hundreds of clinical trials annually.
The Duke University Hospital also provides extensive patient education and support services and extends those services to the families of cancer patients as well. They also offer an Oncology Recreational Therapy program, which provides cancer patients with the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities, interventions, and techniques to improve physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning.
