Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Founded in 1947, Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is dedicated to providing top-notch care to cancer patients while advancing the understanding of diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases.
Originally founded as a children's cancer facility by Dr. Sidney Farber, the institute now serves all ages and employs about 4,000 doctors and staff members who support the visits of about half-a-million patients per year, both inpatient and outpatient. In addition, Dana-Farber participates in approximately 600 clinical trials annually and is known for its excellent, state-of-the-art research facilities.
In addition, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a principal teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School and a founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC), a federally-designated comprehensive cancer center, one of approximately 40 located throughout the country.
Dana-Farber is also home to the "Jimmy Fund", established in 1948 as the principal charity of the Institute. The world-renowned fund is named for one of its first child patients.
Physicians at Dana-Farber's Thoracic Cancer Treatment Center are responsible for the care of patients with malignant mesothelioma of all varieties. The Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology Program at Dana-Farber has established a multi-disciplinary approach to the disease, recognizing that mesothelioma patients often must undergo a variety of treatments in order to address their disease with success.
Additional supportive services are available as well, including access to licensed therapists, a palliative and pain management care program, and other more unusual services, such as a creative arts therapy program featuring arts activities for patients, and a complementary therapies program that offers alternative treatments such as massage therapy and acupuncture.
