Barnes-Jewish Hospital was created by the 1996 merger of Barnes Hospital and The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. Each hospital brought a rich tradition of excellence. Barnes Hospital opened in 1914 and Jewish Hospital in 1902, the latter designed to serve the needs of the immigrant population in turn-of-the-century St. Louis.

Currently, Barnes-Jewish is an affiliated teaching hospital of the Washington University School of Medicine. They boast a 1,700 member staff of physicians, many of whom have been recognized as among the best in their field.

A nationally-designated comprehensive cancer care center, Siteman Cancer Center is dedicated to providing treatment, education, and support to cancer victims and their families. Siteman treats all types of cancer and employs oncologists with various specialties as well as surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other medical staff that work together to develop an interdisciplinary approach to treating a specific patient.

The School of Medicine at Washington University holds more than $130 million in grants earmarked for the purpose of cancer research. The researchers and physicians at Siteman are organized into eight research programs dedicated to bringing the latest laboratory discoveries to patients and the public.
